'Smart' Appliances

The first web site I ever got paid real money to produce was for Sunbeam Appliances. They were "launching" a line of smart appliances under the brand name Thalia. That was early 2000 if I remember correct. Five years later all google turns up is press releases from that era.. Perhaps that's enough commentary.

Ultimately though there will be a few 'smart' appliances, although one wonders if they'll need to pretend to be dumb in order to succeed. More realistically the ones that will succeed are those driven not by the technology, but by real ideas and real needs. The concept needs to lead the technology, not the reverse. The grand schema cooked up by tech company marketing departments will keep stumbling, although one day one of these companies might find that magic market creation ability (ala say Procter and Gamble)...
