Conceptualizing the Xport

I'm having some trouble conceptualizing what this xport can do. I know its a little server that hooks in with a microchip. But is it best suited for taking in sensor data and pumping to the web? Or is better suited to pull info off the web and out into the physical via the PIC? Or hopefully both?
